On June 13 we witnessed a “Miracle In The Making”, thanks to the generosity and dedication of Robin Jaas and her family, and with help of Massimo and Mary Breda. Our longtime supporter Mike Meziere led the build.
However this story is not only about the Guillermo Mejia family receiving a solid new home, but of their son, eight year old Ian, whose feet are badly deformed.
Born with clubfeet that are back to front, the little guy has to be carried around and spends much of his life sitting in one place until someone moves him or he manages to crawl from one dusty spot to another. There are nine people in the family, including 6 children and grandma Claudia. The family lived in a tent with a dirt floor, two of the old boys were sleeping in a car.
Under the leadership of Mike Meziere and members of his family, two homes were built and food donations bought to help them on a step up the ladder to a better life.
It broke this writer’s heart the first time I saw Ian, his mom said the Doctor had told them he would have to have his feet amputated but she just couldn’t do it.
This past weekend, thanks to Pat Davis of Encinitas Rotary, a special pair of crutches were delivered to the family. You will see attached photos of Ian standing and starting to walk for the first time ever, with the aid of those crutches.
An orthopedic doctor has suggested that his clubfeet are because of malformed ankles and might be fixed. We are hoping this might be the answer to all our prayers on Ian’s behalf and hope to find an organization or doctor to do so.
Thank you for reading this story, we all do what we can to help those in need and it is immensely gratifying to be able to make the difference for the Guillermo Mejia family and especially little Ian.
