In May, a dedicated and enthusiastic team from the Carlsbad Rotary Club—led by Bastel and Bill—traveled to Tijuana with Project Mercy Baja to build a home in just one day for a young family living in a tent.

Yessica and Kevin, both born in Tijuana, were raising their two daughters, Camila and baby Alaya, in challenging conditions—without running water, electricity, sewage systems, or proper shelter. Though both parents work full-time at a tequila factory, their income wasn’t enough to build a home while also covering land payments and daily essentials.

They have been raising their young children in a tent meant for camping–until Carlsbad Rotary stepped in to help. With love and determination, Carlsbad Rotarians transformed the site into a safe, solid home. The build brought more than just a roof—it brought comfort, stability, and space for the young family to grow.

As Yessica shared, “Having a decent house will help us be more comfortable as a family, and our daughters will have their own space and a safer place to grow up. Our family will always be grateful.”

One young family. One day. One house— A lifetime of impact.
