A chance encounter at an ice cream shop between one of our board members and wife with Karen and Paul Seckendorf led to a conversation about Project Mercy Baja’s mission to build homes in Tijuana for those in need. Later that night Karen and Paul decided they wanted to step up and fund and build a home. On Saturday June 17th, 2023 that commitment was realized when a team of their family and friends crossed the border and built a new home for the Cobos Vázquez family.
Working along side the Project Mercy Baja crew and members of the Cobos Vázquez family, a new home went up in one day. This new home replaced their existing shack which had a leaking tarp for the roof and a dirt floor. In the dad Carlos’s own words “Having a decent house would be a dream come true for us. We would no longer be so uncomfortable, and I would be more relaxed because my children would be protected from the rain, the sun and the cold that they are suffering with now.”
At the end of the day Karen and Paul presented the family with the keys to their new home. The Seckendorf’s also presented the family with a care package of food and other items. Many tears of happiness, hugs and smiles were shared by everyone.
